These nine carols are presented in the order that matches the service created in 1880 by E.W. Benson, Bishop of Truro, and widely known as a result of the yearly Christmas broadcast from King’s College.

The carols were premiered in December 1998 by the Piedmont Chamber Singers with Don Armitage conducting. The Chamber Singers recorded the set in early 1999 and included it (along with my Three Nativity Songs) on their Christmas CD titled Let Our Gladness Have No End. The first performance of the songs in a Service of Lessons & Carols was at Christmas 1999 at Augsburg Lutheran Church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, again with Don Armitage conducting.

This revised edition was made for performances by the Piedmont Chamber Singers in 2005 with William Osborne conducting. For these concerts, abbreviated versions of the lessons were used (see back cover).
